Social Change 2.0 – David Gershon
By Editor, on March 17th, 2011
A blueprint for Re-inventing Our World.
This book begins with ambitious intent: “we are being called to reinvent not only our world,” writes David Gershon, “but also the process by which we achieve this reinvention”. The familiar social change tools of protests, campaigns and lobbying are not working fast enough. To address the accelerating unravelling of our planet’s life support system, we need to step up in our capacity as change-makers. Based on more than three decades of research and an impressive track record of practice, what Gershon offers are proven tools and game-changing principles that strengthen our ability to transform our society.

Undeniable Genius Isolated from Other Movements,
January 4, 2010, Robert D. Steele (Oakton, VA United States)
This book is a work of undeniable genius and to that I would add perseverence--the author and his wife Gail Straub have been on the forefront of the personal empowerment movement from the late 1970's onward, and in many ways this book is a capstone work that bridges from the personal to the neighborhood and aspires to--but does not quite attain--the goal of being globally meaningful. I previously enjoyed and reviewed Low Carbon Diet: A 30 Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds--Be Part of the Global Warming Solution! but this is the book that moves the author into my pantheon of a dozen world-class thinkers on social change.

Social Change 2.0
By Rossella E. Frigerio, 04 Jan 2010
Few books can claim to have the potential to radically alter our approach to life and consequently change the world, but none more so than David Gershon’s Social Change 2.0. As the global economic and climatic crises push society closer to the cusp of transformation, books such as Gershon’s will be guiding the leaders of the future.

Dream Big. Change Jackson.
Kristin Brenemen, JFP Staff, Dec. 23, 2009
Thinking big. It is much more than a way to envision getting richer or renovating a downtown building into expensive condos. Living and taking action in a world of large ideas is the way we can transform our community into a place all residents are proud to call home and one that lures visitors and newcomers from elsewhere.

Great Turning Times
Chris Johnstone
A purpose of this newsletter is to pass on news of inspiring resources, and I’d like to tell about one that arrived through my letterbox recently. It is a book I’m so impressed by that I’m awarding it the Great Turning Times Book of the Year award for 2009. It is Social Change 2.0 by David Gershon (High Point/Chelsea Green, 2009). Drawing on decades of practice and research into what helps the shift towards sustainability, it describes social change tools that have been proven in the field. The core idea is that while campaigning and protest actions are hugely important, we also need an approach that empowers communities to reinvent our society from the bottom up. That’s not a new idea; what is new is the way this book illustrates how community empowerment tools can address the middle bit of change, engaging people and their enthusiasm, mapping out design principles and strategies you can use in promoting the shift towards a sustainable society.

Social Change 2.0
Hazel Henderson
From a genius-level, inspired, grassroots globalist. David Gershon made history with The First Earth Run and followed up this extraordinary global event with applying the leadership lessons he and his partner Gail Straub teach at their Empowerment Institute. This story is compelling and essential for all those working for a sustainable future.

Community Works
Building Livable Neighborhoods
David Gershon’s new book, “Social Change 2.0” (High Point, 2009, $27.95) may change your mind overnight about the possibilities for effecting immediate change in our city’s most challenged neighborhoods. In Chapter 3, Gershon describes his experience in inner-city Philadelphia, Pa., empowering community members to take control of their block’s challenges—health and safety, beautification and greening, resource sharing and neighborhood-building—and fixing them themselves, with the cooperation of the city. This model is perfect for Jackson: Identify interested facilitators, train them, call block meetings in private homes, set goals, get people to commit to next actions. This program is systemic, and easy—if you believe in possibility. Get started at http://www.empowermentinstitute.net.

Youth Empowerment for Africa
King K. Sarfo, Accra, Ghana, Dec. 6, 2009
Our young organization is gradually growing. Honestly, [I] am being massively inspired by Social Change 2.0. Dave [David] honestly, the material you sent to me is more than just a book. It’s a very powerful tool. I refer to it as today's instrument of change. I have the task of driving an entire organization, though not a very big one. I realize Social Change 2.0 was published just for me. I mean it. My contributions at some recent meetings and gatherings have created significant impacts. The Lord bless you and all you lost while bringing that knowledge to being; [the blessings] should be multiplied in folds. I wanted to finish the material and pass it on to some other colleagues, but I selfishly kept reading. If reading your words inspire me, then seeing you will take me to greater heights. Dave [David] I will henceforth be in regular touch.
